Privacy Policy
Here’s what Kyte keeps about you, why, who sees it, and how to delete it.
Who are we?
Kyte is made by an independent developer (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the current test version of Kyte.
What do we collect?
What you give us
- Your phone number: to sign you in with a code we text you. Nobody else sees it, and nobody can look you up by it in Kyte.
- Your profile: your name, avatar, profile photo and card (badges, frame and banner), so friends and the people on your trips know it’s you. Your photo goes up without its location.
- Your trips: the trips you make or join, and the plans, notes, flights and announcements on them, so everyone on a trip sees the same thing.
- Your drawings: what you draw on the globe, so the friends or trip mates you pick can see it.
- Your friends: who you’re friends with or have asked, the nicknames you give them, and the waves and pokes you send.
- Blocks and reports: so people you block stay away, and so we can look into what you report.
What comes from using Kyte
- Your account ID and friend code: so our server knows your account, and friends can add you.
- Your location, only when you share it: the exact spot or a rough one when you add “Where I am” to an announcement, and the time Trip Assurance sees you at one of your plans.
- A device check: before we text a code, Apple’s App Attest proves your iPhone is running a real copy of Kyte. It says nothing about you.
- Sign-in and security records: when you signed in (not where), your phone’s internet address and app version, and counts that limit texts and requests, to stop misuse.
What comes from others
- Other people on Kyte: invites, requests and waves sent to you, and reports about you.
- Apple, if you test with TestFlight: your name and email if we invited you by email, your build, crash reports, and any feedback you send.
What stays on your iPhone
- Only on your iPhone: trip pictures, the photo pool, photos in announcements, events, most of your settings, and what your badges are worked out from, including roughly where you’ve been if Trip Assurance is on.
- Everything else about where you are: Kyte uses it on your iPhone for the map and Trip Assurance, and never sends it to us.
How do we use it?
- To run Kyte: signing you in, showing you to your friends and the people on your trips, and keeping trips the same on everyone’s phone.
- To keep Kyte safe and working: stopping misuse, warning you if someone else signs in as you, looking into reports, and fixing what TestFlight tells us is broken.
- Our legal basis: giving you the service you signed up for, and our legitimate interest in keeping it safe.
That’s all. No ads, no analytics, no tracking you across other apps or websites, and we never sell or rent your information.
Who can see it?
- Your friends: your name, photo, friend code and, if “Who sees you” is My friends, your card. Flights set to All friends show their route and times, never your seat.
- People on your trips: the trip, who’s on it, and what’s shared on it. When you’re invited, you see the trip’s basics and the people going see you. The trip’s owner can remove what you post on it. A Just me trip is only yours.
- Your drawings: all your friends, or the people on a trip with you now, whichever you pick, until it expires.
- Someone with your friend code: your name and photo, and whether you’re already friends, so they can send a request. Someone you have a request with sees your name and photo too.
- Only you: your nicknames for friends, and who’s seen your announcements. Nobody is ever shown your number, or who your friends are.
- Us: what you report (the reason, your note, and a copy of what was reported). We read reports within a day, and may remove what’s wrong or close an account.
- Companies that work for us: our hosting and database provider, which stores our server’s data encrypted, and the company that texts sign-in codes, which gets your number. They use it only for that.
- Apple: for App Attest, TestFlight and Apple Maps, which gets your searches and, for “Where I am”, your coordinates. Apple’s privacy policy covers these.
- Apps you pick: what you share or open in another app, like directions in Google Maps, goes to that app, under its own privacy policy.
Where is it stored?
- Our server is in the United States. If you live somewhere else, your information goes there to be stored.
- Your iPhone keeps a copy, so Kyte works without a signal. Apart from your sign-in, it’s part of your iPhone’s own backups, which we can’t read.
How long do we keep it?
- Your account: your profile, friend code, friends, nicknames and blocks, while your account is open.
- Trips: until they’re deleted. Leave a trip and the plans, notes and announcements you added to it are deleted, and your flights stay in your Flights list.
- Drawings: an hour, a day or a week, as you pick.
- Waves and requests: until they’re seen or answered.
- Reports: with their copies of what was reported, until 90 days after we’ve dealt with them.
- Security records: mostly a day to a month. A few last until half a year after you stop using that iPhone, and the dates you changed your friend code stay while your account is open. Our server’s logs, which include phone numbers and internet addresses, go after 7 days.
- TestFlight details: while the beta runs, or until you ask us to delete them.
- What’s on your iPhone: until you delete it, your account or Kyte.
How do you delete your account?
- 14 days to change your mind: Settings → Account → Delete account and data erases Kyte’s data from your iPhone at once, and deletes your account from our server 14 days later unless you sign back in.
- Straight away: your profile photo is deleted, and you disappear from your friends and your trips.
- Your trips: each one with other people on it passes to whoever joined it first, and the rest are deleted.
- What’s left: records of texts to your number go within a day, and nothing deleted stays in our backups or logs past 7 days. The company that texts codes keeps its own records under its terms.
- Deleting the app: erases what’s on your iPhone, but not your account. Sign in again to delete it, or email us.
What are your choices?
- Permissions: location, Trip Assurance, notifications, the camera, photos and Calendar are all optional. Kyte sees only the photos you pick, can’t read your Calendar, and uses the camera only for QR codes.
- Who sees you: choose whether friends see your card, who can invite you to trips (and stop one trip from inviting you again), and who sees each flight.
- Blocking: block someone and you disappear from each other, on trips too, and they aren’t told.
What are your rights?
- Access and a copy: ask what we hold about you.
- Correction: change your profile in Kyte, or ask us to fix anything else.
- Deletion: delete your account yourself, or ask us to.
- More where you live: the GDPR (in the UK and EU) and California law may give you more, including the right to raise a concern with your data protection authority.
Email [email protected] and we’ll reply within 30 days.
Who is Kyte for?
Kyte is intended for users 13+. It isn’t designed for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
What if this policy changes?
Before more of your information leaves your iPhone, like trip photos, we’ll update this policy, change the date at the top, and tell you in the app.
How do you reach us?
